According to a recent study, hemp, which is also known as cannabis, has the ability to capture more carbon dioxide than forests.
If you’ve been keeping up with the Hemp Cultivation Industry in the United States lately, you will know that the hemp crop is now of the highest-quality in history. A recent article by Chris Williams at The Huffington Post discusses the benefits of hemp as a carbon capture system. In his article, he compares the carbon capture potential of hemp to the capture potential of trees. Hemp grows much faster than trees, making the carbon capture process more efficient. Hemp also requires less maintenance and produces more biomass per acre than a forest, making it a perfect solution for carbon capture.
A UK researcher has calculated how much carbon dioxide (CO2) is captured from the atmosphere by hemp fields compared with forest plantations. The study, commissioned by UK plant-based materials company SCB, also found that hemp can be made into a range of products, including paper, textiles, paints and plastics, to meet global demand for sustainable materials.According to Darshil Shah, a researcher at the University of Cambridge, hemp can sequester carbon in the atmosphere twice as efficiently as trees. Here’s how.
Hemp Blockchain, Inc, a Utah-based agricultural technology company, has proposed a new solution for measuring and recording carbon emissions and atmospheric carbon sequestration information for hemp farms: Blockchain.
The product, which is part of what the company calls the Carbon Protocol Initiative, could become a new standard for determining the net carbon footprint of cannabis companies, which is one of the company’s goals.

The solution will capture critical point data throughout the cultivation process and record both CO2 absorption and emissions on the blockchain.
The system will then issue carbon credits to farmers, which will be converted into tokens. Carbon Offset, which can be used by companies to offset their carbon emissions to meet their CSR and ESG obligations, the company said in a press release.
Hemp Blockchain is creating a crucial piece of digital infrastructure that will enable efficient and secure transactions across the industry, said Dan Higbee, CEO of Hemp Blockchain.
Hemp is a leader in CO2 resistance: According to Darshil Shah, a researcher at the University of Cambridge, hemp can sequester carbon in the atmosphere twice as efficiently as trees.
Industrial hemp absorbs 8 to 15 tonnes of CO2 per hectare of cultivated land, while forests typically absorb 2 to 6 tonnes of CO2 per hectare per year, depending on climate, region and stage of growth, Shah told Dezeen.
Dr Shah, a member of the Centre for Natural Materials Innovation, part of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Cambridge, researches biomaterials and focuses on building technologies that reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry to zero.
Shah emphasized hemp’s role as a source of sustainable building materials for the future, noting that the plant could produce more usable fiber per hectare than forestry. Hemp fibers can be used to produce bioplastics and wood-based materials that can replace building materials such as fiberglass and aluminum.A new study published in the journal Nature Communications found that hemp-based bioproducts accelerate the decomposition of woody biomass, capturing more carbon dioxide than trees do. The study investigated the effects of woody biomass consumption on ecosystem carbon balance in the presence of different bioproducts. The authors found that hemp-based bioproducts can help decrease the net carbon gain in the terrestrial biosphere. This could be an important finding for farmers, who are increasingly using hemp for biomass production in order to mitigate the negative effects of climate change by capturing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere..
