The San Benito County Sheriff’s office (SB County Sheriff) is seeking tougher penalties for illegal cannabis farms in the area. According to reports, almost half of the illegal marijuana farms in the county are located in the area of Hollister Ranch, where they grow around 5,000 plants each year.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office recently asked the District Attorney’s Office to recommend tougher penalties for growers of illegal cannabis farms in unincorporated areas of the county, according to Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley. The DA’s office has until Monday to prepare a sentencing recommendation. “We need to deter people from growing marijuana in our unincorporated areas,” Dudley said. “This is a serious offense.”
Since the legalization of cannabis in 2012, illegal “grow houses” have been popping up across the county, despite the fact that the law forbids them. Most of these operations are run by Mexican drug cartels, who are also responsible for kidnappings, homicides, and other crimes. Many of the houses are found in rural areas and adjacent to schools, where children are often present.
