New research on cannabis and cancer

The idea of using cannabis as a cure for cancer has been around for some time, but the world has often been hesitant to embrace it. Decarboxylation is a chemical process (usually involving heat) in which a compound loses a carboxyl group and is converted into another compound. The version we are most familiar with is the decarboxylation of THCA to THC. THC is a cannabinoid, THSA is a phytocannabinoid.

In this particular study, published in March, scientists identified specific fractions of the cannabis strain that are particularly effective in reducing the viability and motility of GBM cells in humans. Translated, this means that they reduce the ability of cancer cells to survive and move. Specific cannabinoid fractions not only suppressed viability and motility, but also reduced the ability of cancer cells to form colonies in two- and three-dimensional models.

These colonies are associated with increased resistance to existing medical treatments. According to this study, cannabis treatment can suppress the formation of these GBM neurospheres, making treatment more feasible. Consider the colonies formed by bacteria such as MRSA and the difficulty of controlling them due to biofilms. Well, it’s a similar concept, making these cells just as hard to reach.

Is the GBM really that bad?

These tumors are particularly difficult to treat for the following reasons: Localisation to hard-to-reach sites, resistance to standard treatments, insufficient recovery of the brain, damage to neighbouring brain tissue, leakage from the tumour leading to fluid accumulation around the tumour and intracranial hypertension, interruption of the blood supply through the tumour making treatment difficult, epileptic seizures caused by the cancer, and neurotoxicity of existing treatments

These cancers are not easy to overcome and are associated with an unfortunate number of deaths. In general, about 40% survive the first year after diagnosis and only 17% survive the second year. Tumors can be diagnosed with different types of MRI scans, and the cancer is usually treated with a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Because tumor cells infiltrate adjacent cells, it is virtually impossible to remove the entire tumor during surgery, so radiation and chemotherapy are necessary. The surgery usually takes the form of a craniotomy, which is the opening of the skull, and because doctors must be careful not to remove parts that could further damage the brain, the surgery is sometimes performed while the patient is conscious.

Once the wound from the surgery has healed, the next step in regular treatment will be radiation therapy, which targets the tumor cells still present in the brain. It damages cancer cells, damaged brain cells and also healthy brain cells. It should be noted that a prognostic factor for the development of glioblastoma is previous therapeutic irradiation, i.e., one cancer treatment may cause the same cancer, and irradiation from other cancer treatments may cause glioblastoma. Some patients also receive chemotherapy in the form of the drug temozolomide. This medicine is taken during radiation therapy and for six cycles after treatment, with each cycle lasting 28 days. Should we expect cannabis to kill cancer?

No matter how long it takes for this to become common knowledge, this time does not affect the plant’s ability to fight cancer.
