Gliomas are the most common type of primary brain tumor, and are responsible for 5% of all primary brain tumors worldwide. Primary brain tumors are not curable, but are a small percentage of all brain tumors.

According to the findings of a research published in Frontiers in Oncology, a nightly dosage of medical cannabis (MC) enhanced sleep and other quality of life (QOL) outcomes in patients with high-grade gliomas.
Researchers performed a randomized, phase 2 study in patients with recurrent or incurable high-grade gliomas, such as glioblastoma multiforme and grade III anaplastic astrocytoma, to compare two ratios of oral MC oil.
A total of 88 individuals were recruited in the trial. Their average age was 53.3 years, and the bulk of the patients were White (95.2%) and female (49.4 percent ).
The patients were given either a 1:1 ratio of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to cannabidiol (CBD) or a 4:1 ratio of THC to CBD at random. The THC dosage in the 1:1 group was 4.6 mg/ml, whereas the CBD dose was 4.8 mg/ml. The THC dosage in the 4:1 group was 15 mg/ml, whereas the CBD dose was 3.8 mg/ml.
The researchers used a paired t-test for the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy – Brain to evaluate QOL changes from baseline to week 12. (FACT-Br). Physical domains (P =.025), functional domains (P =.014), and sleep (P =.009) all improved more with the 1:1 ratio than with the 4:1 ratio.
The researchers also used MRI to determine the severity of the illness. A total of 53 individuals had an MRI at the beginning and at the end of the study.
There were no significant changes in disease status between the 1:1 and 4:1 therapy groups, according to the scans. Overall, 11 percent of patients had illness decrease, 34% had stable disease, 16 percent had T2 flair and mild enhancement, and 10% had progressive disease.
According to the researchers, both MC ratios were well tolerated. In either arm, there were no severe side effects. Dry mouth (13 percent), fatigue at night (11 percent), dizziness mostly at night (10 percent), and sleepiness were the most frequent adverse effects (7 percent ).
The researchers wrote, “This study is one of the first to evaluate the safety and tolerability of MC in this vulnerable cancer population, a patient group with BBB [blood-brain barrier] disruption, impaired brain function, and a variety of medications, including chemotherapy, corticosteroids, and antiepileptics.”
“Our findings indicate that cannabis, particularly a 1:1 CBD/THC combination, may be beneficial for a variety of symptoms affecting QOL in this patient group, particularly sleep disturbance.”
Gliomas are brain tumors, but unlike other cancers, gliomas are generally slow growing and rarely metastasize or spread to other parts of the body. With a few rare exceptions, these tumors are believed to be benign, meaning they don’t spread and have a great prognosis. Unfortunately, older patients are less likely to survive glioma, and those that do have an increased risk of developing secondary cancers, such as brain metastasis..
