The study, led by Dr. David J.A. Hill from the University of Sussex in England, found little evidence that marijuana use has a negative impact on motivation and performance among individuals who are not dependent upon cannabis for sleep or pain reliefA new study from the University of Pittsburgh published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence has concluded that marijuana use does not have a negative impact on motivation. Marijuana Motivation

According to recent research published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, cannabis usage by teenagers is not linked to an increased risk of “amotivational syndrome.”

According to NORML, researchers from Florida International University (FIU) studied the relationship between marijuana usage and motivation in a group of 401 teenagers (ages 14 to 17) over the course of two years.

“[D]espite substantial increases in levels of cannabis use in our group, change in cannabis use did not predict changes in motivation, suggesting that cannabis use may not lead to motivation decreases over time,” the researchers concluded.

After investigators accounted for participants’ use of alcohol and tobacco, among other possible confounders, the authors concluded that teenage cannabis use was not linked with any significant changes in motivation, apathy, or engagement (such as age, sex, and depression).

“Our results do not indicate a connection between cannabis use and decreases in motivation over time in a sample of adolescents at risk for escalation in cannabis use in a sample of adolescents at risk for escalation in cannabis use,” the research found.

The “norml news” is a marijuana use not linked to loss of motivation, study concludes. The findings are based on a review of more than 100 studies conducted over the last 20 years.
