Maine’s recreational marijuana market is expected to have a busy summer, with legalization slated to begin on a staggered basis in July, with only 10 of the state’s 21 counties having legal sales by that time.

Maine’s recreational marijuana market is expected to be very busy this summer. According to the folks at the Maine Lottery, more than 55 percent of Mainers support the legalization of marijuana for recreational use. That’s pretty amazing considering the state’s total population is just over 1.3 million.

Maine is just months away from legalizing recreational marijuana, and it’s expected that it will be a booming market. But with that comes issues of supply, particularly when it comes to the state’s medical marijuana program, which has been growing at a rate of 100-150 pounds per week since the market opened in 2015. According to the Maine Department of Agriculture, this year’s forecast calls for 400-500 pounds, a jump from 2015’s estimated 200 pounds, and the first time medical marijuana is expected to produce more than half the state’s recreational market.
