On Monday, Colorado lawmakers are expected to vote on a bill that would limit the amount of money large marijuana growers can take home in profit. The proposal comes after a series of raids in the state this year led by federal law enforcement agents. Authorities allege that large marijuana growers are responsible for a number of crimes, including keeping “large quantities of cash” and using “large amounts of marijuana for distribution” that are illegal under federal law.
Last week, Colorado House Bill 1319 was voted out of committee and is now on the path to being sent to the full House of Representatives. The bill proposes to: 1. Set a THC potency limit at 15%, or 5% if the consumer is a “medical marijuana cardholder”. 2. Require all businesses in the marijuana industry to be licensed and regulated by the state. 3. Limit the number of marijuana plants that can be in a household. 4. Create a “seed to sale” tracking system to keep track of marijuana from seed to sale.
Colorado residents will vote on a controversial ballot initiative in November that would prohibit marijuana businesses from obtaining certain types of licenses. If passed, the measure will make it difficult for anyone who runs a marijuana business to obtain necessary licenses, including the state’s retail marijuana licenses. There is also concern about how well the measure will be enforced, as the state has had trouble regulating the already-legal marijuana industry..
