Cannabis has been used as a treatment for depression and other mental health issues for centuries. With the recent legalization of cannabis in Canada, more people are turning to this natural remedy.

The edibles for depression and anxiety is a great way to get relief from symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health issues.

According to a study published in the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine by the University of New Mexico and Releaf App, cannabis flower may be effective in providing immediate relief for the symptoms of depression — a condition that affects roughly one in every five adults in the United States and often leads to other illnesses like cancer, substance use disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and dementia. “The results indicate that, at least in the short term, the overwhelming majority of patients who use cannabis have antidepressant effects,” according to the study. “However, the size of the impact and the extent of side effect experiences vary with chemotypic characteristics of the plant.”

The Investigation

The research was conducted by Jacob Vigil, a psychology associate professor at UNM, and Sarah See Stith, an economics assistant professor at UNM, and was titled “The Effectiveness of Cannabis Flower for Immediate Relief from Symptoms of Depression.”

The researchers concluded that, on average, patients reported an improvement in symptoms of nearly 4 points on a scale of 0 to 10 just moments after consuming whole, dried, natural cannabis flower – commonly known as cannabis buds – after reviewing 5,876 outcomes reported anonymously by 1,819 individuals tracking their cannabis use for treating depression through the Releaf App.

By way of comparison, readers should be aware that traditional antidepressant medications (such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors, and selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) typically take several weeks, if not months, to begin providing significant relief. Sedation, agitation, anxiety, anorgasmia, demotivation, and suicidal thoughts are all possible adverse effects of these conventional pharmaceuticals, according to the research.

“One of the most intriguing results from this research is that cannabis flower with rather high amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is linked with rapid decreases in the severity of depressed feelings,” Jacob Miguel Vigil stated. “Other antidepressant and synergistic chemicals in the plant, including as minor cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, may explain variations in time-to-effect and relative side effect prevalence among products and users.”

Additional Information

The majority of patients who used natural cannabis flower products to treat their depressive symptoms experienced antidepressant benefits, according to the research. However, the degree of these benefits and the level of side effects suffered differed depending on the plant’s characteristics.

The researchers also found that up to one in five people who consumed cannabis flower with high THC levels had undesirable side effects including feeling uninspired. Having said that, the research participants were three times more likely to feel good impacts such as happiness, optimism, serenity, and relaxation, according to the findings.

“It’s become apparent over the last several years that people using Releaf App are monitoring their mental health symptoms in more depth to better understand how cannabis may assist them,” said Keenan Keeling, CEO of MoreBetter, the business behind Releaf App. “In the past, cannabis effectiveness studies have focused on chronic physical illnesses including pain, cancer, and epilepsy. Understanding how cannabis impacts mental health problems like depression is becoming more essential and relevant.”

“With no end in sight to the depression epidemic, and given the limitations and potential severe negative side effects of conventional antidepressants, there is a real need for people to be able to treat mood disturbances with natural, safe, and effective medications, and cannabis checks all three boxes,” Vigil concluded.

Cannabis provides immediate relief for symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Sativa or indica strains are the most common types of cannabis used for medicinal purposes. Reference: sativa or indica for depression and anxiety.
